DIY: How to Make CBD Edibles

fork

Edibles are a popular means of consumption for cannabis connoisseurs who don’t like to smoke, and CBD is a popular cannabinoid for consumers who don’t like to feel “high.” If you’re the kind of consumer who doesn’t like to smoke or feel high, then CBD edibles were practically made for you.

They're also a great way to take the edge off when you've had too much THC.

With all the benefits of the CBD cannabinoid and none of the risk that goes along with smoking or vaping, CBD edibles allow consumers to enjoy the plant with ease – and some popping flavor.

What Are CBD Edibles?

If you’ve ever been intimidated by a cannabis edible, you’re not alone. Consumers all over the world have lived to tell their tales of all the times edibles flipped their universe upside down – or at least had them glued to the couch for hours with several bags of chips.

With a slower onset time than smoking but a much stronger, fuller-bodied effect, edibles are notorious for being a lot to handle if you’re confused about dosing, which is why CBD edibles are such a great alternative, especially for newcomers.

If you need something to keep you a little more alert throughout the day that still provides you with some benefits, a CBD edible is an ideal addition to your lifestyle. They’re just as discreet as regular edibles, without the wildcard element of metabolized THC running through your system.

While CBD edibles effects won’t give you the intense high that comes from THC, you’ll definitely still feel it. CBD is known for offering consumers a mellow mood boost, with a renewed sense of positive energy and stress relief.

CBD products are also easier to get your hands on. The cannabinoid is legal in most places, and suffers much less of a stigma than full-on cannabis still does.

CBD Edibles Effects

Beyond easy access and an improved mood, there are quite a few reasons to turn to CBD edibles for your cannabis needs. Here are a few of the most commonly recognized benefits from CBD edibles that many consumers report:

  • CBD edibles provide consumers with longer-lasting relief. The effects of smoking or vaping cannabis and/or CBD may be more instantaneous, but you’ll reap a longer, more full-body benefit from consuming edibles.

This is because of how the cannabinoid travels through your body when you ingest rather than inhale. Inhaling CBD will allow it to enter your bloodstream through your lungs, while ingesting results in the CBD slowly being released as food is digested and metabolized.

  • CBD is non-psychedelic. If you’re a consumer who remains cautious around THC and the high feeling it has to offer, CBD is a safe cannabinoid for you to turn to and still reap those sought-after benefits.

CBD is non-psychedelic, meaning you won’t feel any of the high associated with THC. You’ll still feel a bit altered, but in a way that boosts your mood, refreshes your energy, and allows you to feel prolonged relief from pains and/or daily stresses.

  • CBD edibles are the easiest type of edible to make. Edibles in general aren’t too difficult of a feat, although they can be quite time-consuming, especially if you’re going for the full THC effect.

However, the process for crafting CBD edibles is much more straightforward and doesn’t require too much kitchen expertise at all. It’s honestly as simple as infusing a few drops of CBD oil in your favorite meal, snack, or even morning coffee.

This method of infusion is also incredibly easy to dose, which allows you to keep track of how much CBD you’re ingesting at a time with ease.

  • CBD edibles are easier to acquire than most other cannabis products. For as easy as CBD edibles are to make at home, they’re also quite simple to acquire through a cannabis retailer.

Hemp is fully legal in the U.S., and many CBD edibles are derived from hemp. Because of this loophole, you can find CBD edibles or other CBD products in any state in America – or you can simply order some online.

However, ordering CBD online isn’t always so straightforward – especially if you reside in a state with dicey, confusing regulations. All the more reason to make your own, right?

  • The entourage effect may be more relevant with CBD edibles. Not only do edibles move through your body with more intensity and intention, but there’s also more of an opportunity for plant synergy when you go this route.

Furthermore, evidence suggests that the terpenes found in CBD can interact with other terpenes and plant molecules found in nature to produce more intense effects.

For example, mangoes contain a high amount of myrcene, which means if you opt for a myrcene-rich strain of CBD mixed in with some mango green tea, resulting in a much more sedative, relaxing experience.

  • Turning to edibles helps you protect your lungs from possible irritation. Smoking and/or vaping cannabis can result in unsavory effects on your lungs, especially if you’ve purchased your product from an underground, untested source.

Opting for edibles eliminates this risk, which is especially handy if you have sensitive lungs, are prone to lung infections, or are feeling a little under the weather but in need of the positive effects of CBD.

  • Edibles allow for ultimate discretion. Consuming cannabis via edible is the most discreet way to consume the plant, and CBD edibles are even safer.

While THC-infused edibles tend to hit you like a brick wall and may cause your inhibitions to lower, CBD edibles will allow you to remain in control and conscious of your surroundings.

How To Make CBD Edibles

There’s no denying that CBD edibles are a great option for any consumer, whether you’re looking to switch things up or need a tried and true method that works for your busy lifestyle. In any case, it’s time to start talking about creating your very own CBD edibles at home!

As we mentioned earlier, this process is quite straightforward, affordable, and doable for any consumer, no matter how familiar you are with the kitchen.

The easiest way to go about making CBD edibles is to simply purchase some CBD oil and infuse it into whatever you’d like: drinks, meals, snacks, desserts...basically anything ingestible!

However, if you prefer to do things from scratch, it’s not too complicated to extract CBD oil from the plant on your own.

How To Extract CBD Oil At Home

First, you’re going to want to make sure you’re working with a plant that has high levels of CBD and low levels of THC. It may be smart to opt for hemp-sourced CBD if you need to play it safe.

You’ll also need a carrier oil of choice, whether that be coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, or some good old-fashioned butter.

Materials:

  • 14 grams of CBD-dominant cannabis or hemp flower
  • 1 cup of carrier oil/butter of choice
  • Grinder
  • Canning jar
  • Cheesecloth

Steps:

  1. Grind your flower finely before placing it in the canning jar with your carrier oil, covering tightly with the lid.
  2. Place the jar in a saucepan with a few inches of water, bringing it to just below boiling and letting it sit for about three hours, replacing any evaporated water.
  3. Using oven mitts, give the glass a shake every half hour or so.
  4. When three hours are up, turn off the heat and cover your jar with a towel, leaving it there for another three hours to cool.
  5. Repeat the just-below-boiling process once more, then leave the jar with the towel covering it overnight.
  6. For stronger oil, you can repeat the process over the next couple of days before finally straining out your infused oil with the cheesecloth.

Once this is done, you have your very own CBD oil to infuse with whatever you’d like!

Weed Makes Me Introspective: When Cannabis Causes Us to Reconsider Our Life Choices

Pot Prompts Self-Reflection

Being stoned comes with a wealth of side effects – some of which are just part of the fun, while others have been known to get smeared all over a person’s psyche, causing them to gawk out the window every thirty seconds to see if the cops are coming up the stairs.

Perhaps the least discussed byproduct of the bud, however, is its uncanny ability to send the user into a maddening state of introspection. Cannabis can make individuals more attuned to their bodily sensations, emotions, and inner thoughts, which can contribute to this introspective state. Weed can often inspire the high-minded to start questioning their life choices, setting them on a path of self-doubt, self-loathing, and self-destruction.

Aging & Cannabis: New Findings

For decades, cannabis has been widely regarded as a substance with potential cognitive risks, particularly when used over long periods. Governments across the globe have classified it as a controlled substance, citing concerns about the effects of marijuana use, including memory loss, diminished executive function, and long-term neurological impact. But new research is challenging this long-standing assumption, suggesting that cannabis use may not be linked to age-related cognitive decline—and might even be associated with better cognitive preservation over time.

A recent study published in PubMed (NIH, 2024) followed over 5,000 men for more than four decades to analyze the long-term cognitive effects of cannabis use. The results? Men with a history of cannabis use experienced less cognitive decline from early adulthood to late midlife compared to those who never used cannabis.
