Introduction

Indica vs. Sativa - is as hotly contested as Miller Lite’s Taste Great vs. Less Filling debate. The Indica vs. Sativa debate is not something we should expect to end anytime soon.

While the classification of cannabis as Indica or Sativa was proven out as an incomplete way of describing the cannabis plant or its chemovars, it is pertinent to note that Sativa and Indica still play a critical role in cannabis classification and describing the overall effect of cannabis flower.

Sativa effects

Sativa effects are generally associated with the overall feeling derived from Sativa-dominant cannabis strains. This term is often used to describe the feeling of happiness and euphoria (head high) that accompany Sativa-dominant strains.

The high-energy effects of Sativas are often the most sought-after for cannabis use after pain relief. Some of the commonly encountered Sativa effects include but are not limited to the following:

  • Energy
  • Uplifting
  • Creativity
  • Increased concentration and focus
  • Happiness

However, these effects can vary from person to person since our cannabis tolerance and endocannabinoid systems may differ.

Experiencing an enjoyable cannabis experience is all about experimentation. Start with a small dosage and go slow until you identify your cannabis sweet spot.

Sativa vs. Indica: What's the difference?

Indica and Sativa are used to describe the two main types of cannabis that are widely available on the market.

While Sativa is known for its energizing and uplifting effects, Indica is known for its soothing, sedating effects. Sativa is often used to help people feel more active and creative, while Indica is often used to help people relax and unwind.

Farmers and cultivators have found a way to create the perfect balance between Sativa and Indica strains. These are called Hybrids and they offer a combination of effects from both Sativa and Indica to varying degrees.

Sativa vs. Indica: Which is Better?

The answer to this question depends on the person and their preferences. While both Sativa and Indica can provide a variety of effects, what works for one person may not work for another. For example, many people find that Sativas help them feel more energized and motivated, but others find that Sativa-dominant strains leave them anxious or paranoid.

Meanwhile, plenty of cannabis lovers prefer an Indica cultivar at the end of the day to help them relax and to fall asleep. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to experiment and find the perfect strain for their individual needs.

What are the benefits of Sativas?

How to Find the Perfect Sativa for You

Finding the perfect Sativa strain for you can be challenging, but it is possible. The first step is researching what strains are available and legal in your location. You can also talk to a budtender in your local dispensary and ask for their recommendations. Once you have narrowed down your choices, you can experiment with different strains to find the one that works best for you.

Some of the most commonly utilized Sativa-dominant strains are listed below;

The Final Word on Sativa

Like any type of cannabis, there are pros and cons to using Sativa. On the plus side, Sativa is known for its energizing and uplifting effects, as well as its ability to help with depression, anxiety, and pain relief. On the downside, Sativa can sometimes cause anxiety and paranoia in some people, especially at high doses (usually above 50mg).

Cannabis tolerance can vary from person to person; hence, what may appear as a high dosage to one person may work as a moderate dosage in others. The most important thing is understanding your body chemistry and how you react to cannabinoids.

If you’re experimenting with cannabis strains or products, you might consider keeping a cannnabis journal to track your experiences and know which strains and formulations work best for you.

Weed Makes Me Introspective: When Cannabis Causes Us to Reconsider Our Life Choices

Pot Prompts Self-Reflection

Being stoned comes with a wealth of side effects – some of which are just part of the fun, while others have been known to get smeared all over a person’s psyche, causing them to gawk out the window every thirty seconds to see if the cops are coming up the stairs.

Perhaps the least discussed byproduct of the bud, however, is its uncanny ability to send the user into a maddening state of introspection. Cannabis can make individuals more attuned to their bodily sensations, emotions, and inner thoughts, which can contribute to this introspective state. Weed can often inspire the high-minded to start questioning their life choices, setting them on a path of self-doubt, self-loathing, and self-destruction.

Aging & Cannabis: New Findings

For decades, cannabis has been widely regarded as a substance with potential cognitive risks, particularly when used over long periods. Governments across the globe have classified it as a controlled substance, citing concerns about the effects of marijuana use, including memory loss, diminished executive function, and long-term neurological impact. But new research is challenging this long-standing assumption, suggesting that cannabis use may not be linked to age-related cognitive decline—and might even be associated with better cognitive preservation over time.

A recent study published in PubMed (NIH, 2024) followed over 5,000 men for more than four decades to analyze the long-term cognitive effects of cannabis use. The results? Men with a history of cannabis use experienced less cognitive decline from early adulthood to late midlife compared to those who never used cannabis.
