6 Ways to Consume Magic Mushrooms (that don't involve a peanut butter sandwich)

Magic mushrooms taste gross. Let's fix that.

If you have ever consumed magic mushrooms or truffles, then you know they don’t always have the most pleasant taste, in fact, some of them are like eating a mouthful of dirt.

However, with the recent rise of popularity through legalization, decriminalization, and the public becoming more aware of the benefits and potential good that comes with these psilocybin-packed fungi, we see why people may overlook the flavor.

Most people eat them raw or throw them between a slice of bread with some peanut butter to mask the flavor, but if you are going to consume magic mushrooms, we at The Bluntness recommend these alternatives.

1. Shroom Smoothie

We have all probably mixed in our favorite workout powder, supplement, or unsavory greens into a fruit smoothie one time or another to mask the taste. This is no different for shrooms and it’s extremely simple.

Just crush your magic mushrooms in a bag or container, or if you have it available, we recommend a mortar and pestle or grinder for a finer, powder-like consistency.

Once crushed, just begin making your smoothie by adding your favorite ingredients and the shrooms to the blender and mixing until done. Grab a straw and enjoy your fruity-fungi drink.

2. Lemon Tek

Lemon Tek is a process where you take your ground-up shrooms and soak in lemon or lime juice for 15 to 30 minutes before drinking it.

Among the shroom community, the belief is that the citric acid in certain fruits mimics the acids in your stomach. When you consume shrooms raw your stomach acid breaks down the psilocybin into psilocin, the compound that makes you feel “the effects”' of shrooms.

While this is just a theory, many people claim lemon tekking results in a quicker, more intense experience than other ways to take shrooms. So feel free to test this theory yourself and give lemon tekking a try.

3. Mushroom Tea

Who doesn’t love a good cup of tea? Regular mushroom tea has been around for centuries and has a variety of health benefits, so the next logical step is to make tea with magic mushrooms

Take 1 cup of tea for every dried-out gram of mushrooms (you can add more based on preferred potency). We personally recommend breaking down your dry mushrooms into a fine powder.

Heat the water to a rolling boil, but keep in mind psilocybin is sensitive to heat, and begins breaking down around 190°F, so let the water settle for a few seconds before adding the shrooms.

Let them steep for 30 minutes to an hour. Stirring or shaking the mixture can reduce the wait time.  After this, drink the tea along with all of the shrooms that sink to the bottom and watch as the world around you changes as the psilocybin works its magic.

Pro Tip: Try combining this option with the Lemon Tekking method to make a lemon ginger tea that packs a psychedelic punch.

4. Edibles (Chocolate, No Bake Treats)

Shrooms can easily be added into chocolates, confections, and other sweet treats to mask the unpleasant texture and taste. Plus, if done properly, it's a great way to store them for later consumption.

Break down your shrooms and add them to any mix, but keep in mind again that cooking for extended periods of time (30+ minutes) beyond that 190°F temperature we mentioned before could affect potency.

We recommend making the chocolate and adding in the shrooms right before the mix starts to cool and solidify. Alternatively, there is always the option of no-bake treats if you are worried about potency.

5. Capsules

For those who prefer their shrooms in a more medicinal form, shroom capsules offer a great and discreet way of “blasting off'' without the hassle of eating raw mushrooms or mixing them with food.

Simply grind up your shrooms until they are a powder-like consistency and fill empty capsules with a capsule machine. Pop one or two in your mouth and enjoy the trip.

6. Mix them into your Favorite Dish

You know what makes your favorite foods even better? If those foods now have all the benefits of magic mushrooms.

Whether you want to add them to your own recipe or try one of the many recipes out there for shroom dishes, just always remember that psilocybin is sensitive to heat.

If you're looking for something quicker, you can always throw it on a slice of your favorite pizza or crush it up and mix into your favorite sauce. Feel free to get creative with how you add shrooms to your foods.

How you consume mushrooms is just a starting point. Experts in the field of psychedelics, such as Timothy Leary, Terence McKenna, and Alan Watts, have emphasized the significance of "set and setting" in the context of taking psychedelics like mushrooms and truffles.

"Set" refers to one's internal, emotional state, while "setting" pertains to the physical environment where the experience takes place. It's crucial to note that recreational tripping on mushrooms or truffles is not recommended for individuals who are struggling with emotional distress or mental health issues. While some clinical trials have explored the potential therapeutic effects of psilocybin on conditions like depression, these studies were carried out in tightly controlled environments.

To ensure a positive experience with psilocybin, it's important to consume it in a safe and appropriate way. In this article, we've highlighted some of the recommended methods for taking psilocybin mushrooms/truffles, as well as provided guidance on situations where tripping is not advised. Armed with this knowledge, you can have a transformative and fulfilling experience with psilocybin.
